Sochi 2014 Series Grand Ebony Chessmen 5 inches

Classic Staunton design. 5 inch (127 mm) king. Weighted for perfect balance. Bases covered with billiard cloth. Certificate of authenticity. Ideal for a 21 or 23 inch (55 – 60 cm) board. The fiercest knight in the Regency Chess Collection has been reserved for this commemorative set of Ebony Chess Pieces, celebrating Magnus Carlsen’s World Championship win against Vishy Anand. The knight boasts a blazing mane that curls past pointed ears and onto the horse’s forehead. There, players will find a focused expression that gives this ebony ornament a distinctive, deadly character. Unlike many other knight pieces, the horse rests on a hand turned base, which all of the other pieces also share. In fact, the coiled design is found at the top and bottom of all of the other ornaments, including the urn shaped King. At 5 inches, the King is imperious in his size but possesses an astonishing level of detail. Next to him is a similarly detailed queen, which has a classic Staunton shape reincarnated with the Sochi Series characteristics of swollen middles and coiled necks. The same can be said of the delicate bishop and sentry-like pawn, although the castle has a more ornate look. Complementing the fierce knight, the elegant rook has a hand carved top more complex than is usual in Staunton sets. These ebony chessmen are comfortable on chess boards of 21 inches and 23 inches
