The fables of Reynard the Fox are among the longest-established literary traditions in Western history – with even Geoffrey Chaucer basing some of his writing on them. Reynard the Fox himself ties the various tales together – which comprise of beasts satirically taking the places of various human character tropes. These humourous tales have proven so popular that the word ‘renard’ has replaced the word for fox in French. Although he is cowardly and self-seeking, Reynard himself is a sympathetic hero and a strikingly accurate mirror of the human condition. The master craftsmen at Berkeley Chess in Somerset, UK have taken these beloved and charming characters and adapted them into this wonderful chess set, finished with a shining pewter and rich copper metallic colouring. We have paired these incredible pieces with a luxurious black anegre and palisander board, completing this one-of-a-kind set.
