THE PIECES Once again Italfama have excelled themselves with the outstanding quality and exquisite detail in these stunning pieces. The Crusaders are led by no other than King Richard I, the Lionheart. He is supported by his wife, Berengaria of Navarre, who in real life rarely saw her regal husband and remained in their French properties during her marriage and his campaigns overseas. The bishop is Walter Hubert who accompanied Richard on his crusades and was instrumental in raising the ransom following his King’s capture. The knights are atop a cloaked steed in the Kings colours whilst pawns armed with long bows stand to attention. An imposing tower as the rook completes this regal army. Saladin leads the Arabs (aka Saracens), with his wife Ismat ad-Din Khatun by his side. His bishop is an important looking character in long robes and bearing scrolls whilst a knight upon a handsome mount and the archer pawns are armed ready for battle. The Saracen contingent is rounded off with an austere tower depicting the rook. For these outstanding chess men, we would recommend a board of approximately 16 inches. THE HISTORY The English contingent in the Third Crusade (aka The Kings Crusade) came under the command of King Richard I of England following the death of his father Henry at the start of this campaign in 1189. He went on to lead the campaign following the departure of Philip II of France and tallied up many victories against his Muslim counterpart Saladin. Despite all his efforts however, Richard did not retake Jerusalem. Richard never regarded his Kingdom as a responsibility demanding his presence as its sovereign, more he preferred to utilise it as a source of income to support his arms. He was seen as a reverent hero by his subjects and remains one of the few Kings of England remembered by his nickname Richard the Lionheart rather than by his regnal number Richard I and continues to be an iconic figure in both England and France. An-Nasir Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, known as Saladin, was the first sultan of Egypt and Syria and the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. Saladin was a Sunni Muslim of Kurdish origin and led the Muslim military campaign against their Crusader counterparts. At the height of his reign his empire included Upper Mesopotamia, Egypt, Syria, Yemen, the Hejaz and other parts of North Africa.
