Presented on a beautiful Spanish board. Exquisitely ornate. Painstakingly hand painted. 3.25 inch king. THE PIECES Once again, Italfama have excelled themselves with meticulous detail on these pieces. Love dragons? You are going to love this set then as it is mainly based on dragons with the odd warlock, wizard and unicorn thrown into the mix. The chess men are separated by colour – blue and green vs purple and red – which work well together and just add to the whole fantasy feel. An intimidating dragon looking down from a fiery pedestal with his wings spread and large sword in his grasp can be no other than the King Dragon together with his Queen who is reading an old book. A warlock type character protecting his crystal ball represents the bishop whilst the rooks are smaller dragons but are just as intimidating as the king. Wizards with skulls make up the pawns but the most noteworthy are the knights in this set – naturally portrayed as mystical unicorns. The beautiful 15.75 inch walnut and maple board from Spain displays these pieces perfectly however The Fantasy Themed Chess Men are available without the board. Either way, this makes for a superb gift. THE HISTORY The fantasy genre of fiction uses magic or other supernatural elements as the main theme. Many works, be it film or literature, take place in imaginary worlds with magical beings. It tends to avoid science and the lurid tendencies found in science fiction and horror although there can be overlaps.
