The Isle of Lewis Black Cardinal Chess Set

3.35″ king. Weighted for perfected balance. Felted bases. Expertly crafted in England by Berkeley Chess. A stunning recreation of an iconic set of pieces. Paired with a high gloss black Anegre and maple board. New for 2017, these pieces are a beautiful interpretation of the famous Isle of Lewis chessmen, skillfully crafted in England by Berkeley Chess. Paired with a 21.7 inch deluxe black Anegre and maple board, this is an eye catching and highly detailed chess set. The original Lewis Chessmen were carved mostly from walrus ivory with a few pieces carved from whale teeth. The carvings are finely detailed and character has been infused into the pieces. The pieces were found in impeccable condition; only the colouring showed significant wear. Some of the pieces have red staining that has eroded over time, which gives a good indication that the game of chess in medieval times was played with red and white pieces rather than the black and white of modern chess. The expert craftsmen at Berkeley Chess have produced an authentic interpretation of the Isle of Lewis chessmen, which fully does justice to the original pieces.
