The Isle of Lewis Mahogany Cardinal Chess Set

Paired with a beautiful mahogany and birch 21.3 inch board. This Berkeley Chess Isle of Lewis Chess set is a beautiful interpretation of an iconic design, skillfully crafted in England. Paired with a 21.3 inch European made mahogany and birch board, produced using wood from sustainable sources, this set really catches your eye. The original Lewis Chessmen were carved mostly from walrus ivory with a few pieces carved from whale teeth. The carvings are finely detailed and character has been infused into the pieces. The pieces were found in impeccable condition; only the colouring showed significant wear. Some of the pieces have red staining that has eroded over time, which gives a good indication that the game of chess in medieval times was played with red and white pieces rather than the black and white of modern chess. The expert craftsmen at Berkeley Chess have produced an authentic interpretation of the Isle of Lewis chessmen, which fully does justice to the original pieces.
