The Isle of Lewis Russet and Wenge Chess Set

3.35″ king. Weighted for perfected balance. Felted bases. Expertly crafted in England by Berkeley Chess. A stunning recreation of an iconic set of pieces. Paired with a beautiful 21.7 inch wenge and maple deluxe board. We’ve paired these Isle of Lewis chess pieces, crafted in England by Berkeley Chess, with a deluxe wenge and maple board, produced in Spain by the prestigious manufacturer, Rechapados Ferrer. The result is a set that perfectly captures the spirit of the original Isle of Lewis pieces, but adds a luxurious look and feel. The original Lewis Chessmen were carved mostly from walrus ivory with a few pieces carved from whale teeth. The carvings are finely detailed and character has been infused into the pieces. The pieces were found in impeccable condition; only the colouring showed significant wear. Some of the pieces have red staining that has eroded over time, which gives a good indication that the game of chess in medieval times was played with red and white pieces rather than the black and white of modern chess. The expert craftsmen at Berkeley Chess have produced an authentic interpretation of the Isle of Lewis chessmen, which fully does justice to the original pieces.
